Background of the Study
The nurse-patient ratio is a critical factor influencing the quality of healthcare, including psychiatric care. Research has shown that higher nurse-patient ratios lead to improved patient outcomes, including better recovery rates, reduced symptoms, and improved overall well-being (Bates et al., 2024). In psychiatric settings, the quality of care is heavily dependent on the time and attention that nurses can dedicate to individual patients. Nurses play a pivotal role in monitoring patients, administering medications, providing therapeutic interventions, and supporting patients’ mental health recovery (Akinwande et al., 2023).
In Nigeria, particularly in psychiatric hospitals such as Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro in Ogun State, inadequate staffing often leads to overcrowded wards, increased workloads, and diminished quality of care. Nurses are unable to provide personalized attention to each patient due to high patient numbers, leading to suboptimal care (Sule et al., 2023). This study aims to examine the relationship between the nurse-patient ratio and the quality of psychiatric care provided at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Ogun State.
Statement of the Problem
There is a growing concern that the quality of psychiatric care in Nigerian hospitals, particularly in overcrowded psychiatric wards, is compromised due to inadequate nurse-patient ratios. Despite the importance of adequate staffing in ensuring the delivery of quality psychiatric care, the specific relationship between nurse-patient ratios and care outcomes has not been extensively studied in Nigerian psychiatric settings. This study seeks to explore how nurse-patient ratios affect the quality of care provided to psychiatric patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro.

Research Hypotheses
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on psychiatric patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Ogun State, between 2023 and 2025. Limitations include the challenge of measuring the full scope of quality care and the inability to control for all external variables that may influence care outcomes, such as hospital resources and training.
